Cry Happy Tears Over The Most Heart-Warming Moments Inspired By ‘Love, Simon’

The internet is absolutely here for it.

Love, Simon
Brought to you by Love, Simon

Love, Simon is new to buy or rent on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.

At first glance, the film Love, Simon might resemble yet another teen rom-com-slash-drama, complete with just the right amount of pulp.

But look a bit closer, and you’ll see this film is a little different. Love, Simon is one of the first big studio films to deal with some of the nuances of the gay experience. With that said, it’s also a coming-of-age film that’s accessible for everyone.

Directed by Greg Berlanti and based on a YA novel by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon tells the story of closeted high-schooler Simon Spier, played by Nick Robinson. Through an email chain with an anonymous gay classmate, Simon grapples with his identity, sexuality, and his reasons for not coming out.

The film features beautiful people in love, Ferris-wheel kisses, dorky, funny jokes and enough “aww” moments to make a blubbering mess out of even the most stoic viewers. Don’t even think about watching Love, Simon on a plane, unless you’re adequately stocked with tissues and solid self-esteem.

Unsurprisingly, the internet is here for absolutely all of it, with users taking to different platforms to both express a deep love of and appreciation for the film and to relate Simon’s journey to their own.

Some Reddit users are finally seeing their own struggles with being in the closet represented thoughtfully on screen (something that no one should have to wait that long for TBQH):

While people on Twitter have taken inspiration from Love, Simon to make changes in their own lives, like @winonagrace, who came out on Facebook after watching the film:

Likewise, New York writer @RyanSchocket watched the film and felt emboldened enough to come out to his parents:

@dush_ahhh’s girlfriend, on the other hand, redefined the meaning of “grand gestures”, inviting her to an upcoming dance in front of a packed theatre of Love, Simon fans (this one will legitimately make you cry):

For some, Love, Simon couldn’t have dropped at a better time:

Because, as @speriod says, this film is “good for gay people”:

Over on Instagram, reactions have been no less tear-jerking. One user went so far as to get “You get to exhale” – a line delivered by Simon Spier’s therapist mum (played by Jennifer Garner) in the film – tattooed on his arm.

“For me, coming out wasn’t just a one-time thing,” Kryeece Chatman explains in his post. “Every day, I find another part of myself that is conditioned to being in the closet and teach it to breathe. I’ve been learning to exhale for years and I still have to tell myself to do it every single day.”

Instagram user Cynthia Neira  shared a touching post about how she “found her Blue” (a reference to the anonymous character Simon emails with for the vast majority of the movie) and we are stoked for her, tbh:

And the film gets a big tick of approval from Andrew Rannells, whose opinion we obviously trust endlessly.

Beyond the obvious headway for on-screen LGBTQ+ representation, Love, Simon presents an opportunity for anyone who’s here for a heart-warming tale of friendship and love, too – because when there’s thoughtful representation, everyone wins.

And then, of course, there was the moment we learned Nick Robinson’s brother came out to him during the course of filming Love, Simon.

I’m not crying, you’re crying.
