A significant number of Coles stores across the country were unable to open their doors this morning due to a technical glitch affecting cash registers.

But just after 10am, Coles announced that “all Coles supermarkets are open and trading”.

“Earlier this morning we had some minor IT problems in some of our supermarkets which were out of our team members’ control,” a statement read.

“we apologise for any inconvenience our customers experienced earlier this morning.”

Earlier in the morning, some shoppers arrived at their local Coles to see a sign that read:

“We apologise. Our store is currently closed due to circumstances beyond our control. We are working to resolve the issue and will re-open as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

While the outage had affected stores across Australia, not every supermarket had been hit by the glitch.

At some Coles stores the glitch has caused huge delays for customers, but not closure.

Earlier in the month, Coles faced backlash for their decision to reintroduce free plastic bags. After threats of a boycott, the supermarket later reversed the move, saying that at the end of August they would charge for plastic bags once again.
