Here’s How To Watch Coachella’s Biggest Sets

Tame Impala, Ariana Grande and Janelle Monae, oh my!

Around a decade ago, Coachella transcended music festivals and became something else entirely — a genuine cultural event, discussed over water coolers across the world even by complete pop music neophytes.

As part of that transformation, Coachella has been slowly democratised. Now, you don’t need to switch to an all-chickpea diet in order to afford plane tickets to the States (not to mention the costly Coachella ticket itself.)

Thanks to the power of the internet, much of the festival is streamed online, meaning you can replicate the festival experience in your own home. All you need to do is hook up a laptop to your speakers, invite around all of your best mates, dress in a combination of crop tops, jeans and tiaras, and pay at least the price of a mortgage for one watery gin and tonic, served in a plastic cup.

This year, for the first time, both Coachella weekends are being streamed on YouTube. In the past, only the first weekend has been streamed, much to the dismay of punters. That means you can replicate the experience of hosting your own mini-Coachella twice, two weekends in a row.

What it does not necessarily mean, however, is that you’ll get more Coachella. Rather than a front to back livestream, this year YouTube will be offering a curated experience, made up of key performances, ‘vignettes’ and behind the scenes footage.

Big hmmm on that one. At least those key performance have been confirmed to include the festival’s headliners — Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Janelle Monáe, Diplo, Weezer, J Balvin, Khalid, Zedd, Bassnectar, and Chvrches.

Oh, and of course, it’s always possible that Kanye West’s previously very secret, invite only Sunday Service will be streaming as part of the coverage. That event sees the rapper performer gospel-tinged versions of his hits, surrounded by an angelic choir. It’s not included in the confirmed lists of streaming acts, but hey — that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.
