Last year, we announced with a degree of confusion that Chris Rock was set to star in and produce a soft reboot of the Saw films. Well, today a trailer has dropped for that reboot, now titled Spiral: From The Book of Saw.

Confusing title, right? But to be honest, this whole thing is confusing. We got a soft reboot of the Saw franchise literally two and a bit years ago: that film, titled Jigsaw, was a kind of greatest hits of the franchise, designed to reintroduce a new audience of teens to the exploits of an evil puppet and his various traps. By the looks of things, Spiral is completely jettisoning the blueprint set by that film, and is going for more of a Se7en, bizarro noir vibe.

The trailer doesn’t give much away in terms of plot at all: it’s lots of shots of Chris Rock wandering around with a flashlight, staring grimly into darkened corners. It’s not even clear what role Samuel L. Jackson plays in the film, given he only pops up at the trailer’s very end to mutter prophetic and ominous nothings.

But hey, it’s all worth it to see Rock in that classic Saw pose — tied to a radiator, armed with a hacksaw only strong enough to cut through bone, not through chains.

Watch the whole strange enterprise in full here, and then get ready for Spiral: From The Book of Saw to drop this May:
