Donald Glover Gave A Shout Out To Tame Impala At His Massive Perth Show
Legends support legends.
Childish Gambino kicked off his Splendour In The Grass 2019 sideshows with a stadium spectacular in Perth, with Donald Glover confirming mid-set that it was one of his “last ever” concerts as Gambino — and he shouted out Tame Impala, too.
The show marked Glover’s return to Australia after cancelling his tour last November due to a foot injury. Shortly after, the poly hyphenate left Australian fans worried when he announced he would soon retire from making music as Childish Gambino. Thankfully not.
Reviews by Pilerats and triple j suggest it was worth the wait, as Glover — backed by a choir — ran through some of his biggest hits across his decade-long career, plus unreleased fan-favourites. And when we say ran, we mean it: the rapper often popped-up unexpectedly in the HBF Arena’s crowd, with a camera closely following, capturing every move.
He also took the moment to shout out Perth’s biggest non-environmentally destructive export, Tame Impala. Seemingly referencing a Tweet that went viral last week, Glover said Perth should be proud to call the band their own, since they’re a “band black people fuck with”.

Glover’s tour continues this Wednesday at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, before heading to Adelaide’s Spin Off Festival on Friday 19 July, headlining Splendour In The Grass on Saturday, and playing Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena next Wednesday.
Given Tame Impala are also playing Splendour, we hope Glover and Kevin Parker have a huge surprise in store, but to be honest, it might be best to temper ourselves. At the very least, we’d love a photo of the pair hanging out back-stage; they were both highlights of this year’s Coachella, so it’s possible they’re already chummy.
In @donaldglover’s first AU show for his “last tour ever” — his words, not mine — there was EVERYTHING. New music (video related), full choirs, school kids backflipping onto splits, and even a shout-out to Tame Impala: “Black people fuck with Tame Impala — y’all should be proud.” pic.twitter.com/LF6BsuvGXn
