The family of Chadwick Boseman, the actor best-known for his role as Black Panther, have confirmed he has passed away.

According to the message, which was shared on Boseman’s official Instagram and Twitter pages, the performer was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much.”

The message goes on to explain that Boseman filmed many of his most recent projects — including his acclaimed role in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods — while going through treatment. “All were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.”

Boseman first attracted mainstream attention for his performance as James Brown in Get On Up. But it was his role in Marvel’s Black Panther that came to define him.

As T’Challa, Chadwick Boseman brought an unnatural grace and presence to the role. He played a king with all the necessary gravitas, becoming one of the most adored characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side,” the announcement concludes.
