Even Bruce Springsteen is taking the piss out of Malcolm Turnbull’s disastrous phone call with US president Donald Trump.

The rock legend kicked off his concert in Melbourne last night with a nod to the now infamous exchange, in which Trump reportedly blasted Turnbull over the terms of a “dumb” Obama deal to accept 1,250 refugees currently locked up on Manus Island and Nauru. Trump supposedly called the arrangement “the worst deal ever” before terminating what was meant to be an hour long conversation after 25 minutes.

“We stand before you, embarrassed Americans”, Springsteen told the crowd at AAMI Park on Thursday evening, before launching into an acoustic cover of the Orlons’ 1962 pop hit ‘Don’t Hang Up’.

“We’re going to use this to send a letter back home,” he declared.

Springsteen had previously told the ABC that Trump’s election would influence the set list during his tour of Australia.

“Art’s responsibility is always the same thing — it is to witness and to testify,” he said. “That is the basic job of the E Street Band, we observe and we report.”

“We witness and we testify and hopefully through doing so, we lift up and help people transcend and we try to inspire people during tough times — it’s been our job for 40 years and it will continue to be so in the next coming years.”
