The Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe made a rape joke last night while talking to the audience at Sydney’s The Metro.

The incident was captured on film by a member of the audience. According to the audience member, it was part of a wider rant in which Newcombe called the audience “baboons” and complained about Sydney’s lock-out laws.

The footage shows Newcombe complaining about rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club — a band that originally called themselves The Elements — before saying the joke.

“[Black Rebel Motorcycle Club] is also called The Elements and that’s a stupid fucking name. In fact there’s another band called The Elements with a flyer outside the show. Whatever, you’re a dickhead. Your mum probably screamed like that when she was being raped and that’s how you were born.”

While some in the audience applauded the joke, most booed. Fellow band members looked shocked that the joke was made.

We’ve contacted the band for comment, but they haven’t responded. We’ll keep you posted.

On Twitter, one fan said that they would never see the band again after Newcombe made the joke.

Others were appalled.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American psychedelic rock band that has been playing since 1990. They’ve released 17 albums, the most recent of which was Something Else. The group is in Australia for the next week, and have dates set for gigs all across Europe over the coming months.

The music outfit starred in DIG!, a documentary that tracked the band’s love-hate relationship with close rivals The Dandy Warhols.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre have plans to return to Australia in 2019.
