The harrowing trailer for Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased has finally been released, giving us our first look at the gay conversion drama tipped to be a major player at this year’s Academy Awards.

Adapted by Edgerton from Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name, the film follows a teenage boy in a small American town whose devout Christian family places him in a “conversion therapy” program after he reveals to them that he’s gay. Lucas Hedges stars alongside Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as his parents, while Edgerton makes an appearance as the head of the conversion program.

Also featured is Australia’s Troye Sivan, who has a small part as another young man in the program. In addition to his acting role, the pop-star recorded a new song with members of Sigur Rós that can be heard in the trailer and will feature on the film’s official soundtrack.

Boy Erased will hit cinemas later in the year.
