The trailer for the new Marilyn Monroe film Blonde, starring Ana De Armas, was released overnight — and it’s not all beer and skittles, that’s for sure.

Based on the book of the same name by writer Joyce Carol Oates, the movie will focus on what was happening in the American icon’s inner life, who famously died by suicide when she was 36.

“Marilyn killed herself, and this is a film about her emotional life. It questions why she killed herself, so naturally it’s going to be disturbing,” film director Andrew Dominik told Rolling Stone UK. “Look, happy people don’t kill themselves. People who have wonderful experiences of lives don’t kill themselves.”

Dominik stressed, however, that the forthcoming Netflix film is fictional. “I think Blonde is a work of fiction and it’s got just as much Joyce in it as it does Marilyn. But having said that, I think it’s probably closer to the truth than what [earlier depictions were] pushing to sell Marilyn stuff,” he said.

De Armas, who was a famous actress in Cuba before being introduced to anglophone audiences in Knives Out and Bond film No Time to Die, called it “the most intense work” she has done; and apparently did nine months of dialect coaching to perfect Marilyn’s accent. “I’m not going to let anybody or anything tell me I cannot dream of playing Marilyn Monroe,” she said.
