Because time is a flat circle, and we are all rushing inevitably towards an uncertain and strange future, Vanity Fair just dropped their fourth iteration of their yearly Billie Eilish interview.

For those not in the know, since her sixteenth birthday, the publication has sat down with the ‘bad guy’ singer each year and asked her the same set of simple questions. Prompts range from discussions of her number of Instagram followers, to more heady questions about her thoughts about the future and reflections on the 12 months that have passed.

Which makes the interview particularly odd this time around, given that the last 12 months have been, y’know, a little bit depressing.

Eilish herself acknowledges the impact of the pandemic, dropping that new, potent c-word early in the chat.

“I’m very, very lucky to have had this year play out the way it did,” Eilish said. “Because for a lot of people it was literally Hell. And I’ve been pretty blessed for the future I’ve had this year.”

But hey, the joy of seeing the Billie Elish of the present and the Billies of the past disagree with one another is still just as profound as ever. A particularly sweet moment? Watching the singer cock her head, genuinely moved, at hearing 2019 Billie saying her major goal is to “stay happy”.

Let’s just hope we keep getting these videos every year till the planet falls apart, hey?
