Early today, teenage pop star Billie Eilish was announced as the musician behind the next James Bond theme song.

The pairing makes a lot of sense. Eilish’s work has always combined throwback genre stylings with something deeply modern — her music finds the mid-point between the nineties and now, and mines it for all that it’s worth. Which very much fits the vibe of the new Bond outing, No Time To Die.

After all, that film, directed by acclaimed auteur Cary Fukunaga, has been all about bringing the super-spy crashing into the future. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, she of Fleabag fame, was tasked with bringing 007’s politics into the present; now, Billie Eilish will do the same thing with his music.

Needless to say, the young singer is pretty chuffed with the gig.

“It feels crazy to be a part of this in every way,” she said. “James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist. I’m still in shock.”

But despite how obviously great the choice is, some denizens of the internet have decided to raise up their voices in protest, claiming that Eilish is too young and too new.

Oh, and then there are those who reckon that Eilish is, ahem, a satanist.

Can’t please anyone these days.
