Bazio Sucks: “Sometimes I Walk Around In Public Barefoot”

Melbourne artist bazio’s ability to translate human emotions into breezy, floating pop tracks feels innate.

He was born with the ability to breathe, and he was seemingly born with the ability to usher you into his world with just a few carefully chosen words. While he’s only released a smattering of singles to date, recent singles ‘Gasoline’ and ‘Blur’ make you feel like you’re settling into a bed of clouds.

‘Blur’ is a love song that uses small memories to convey his adoration for his “brown-eyed heaven”, while ‘Gasoline’ sees bazio wishing that he could fly off to Mars to “have tea with an alien”. Hopefully ET’s a good chef.

Before music, however, bazio was on the path to soccer stardom — and that’s not the only fun fact about him. Bazio told us about his love of plane crash analysis videos, watching Premier League highlights when procrastinating and eating too much McDonalds. Procrastinating sucks, as does spending too much money on junk food.

However, bazio’s belief that people can change — with the right support — definitely does not suck. We’re all working towards a better future, after all.

Junkee: A mistake that turned into an opportunity?

Putting my song ‘Criminals’ out. The only reason I released it was because one of my homies really liked the song and wanted to stream it. I released it independently via Amuse and it got added to a bunch of Spotify playlists. That shit was tight as hell.

Cringe quote you used to live by?

I’ve never really thought about that. I just go day-by-day and always try and do the things I’m passionate about. It’s hella corny, but maybe “follow your dreams”.

Worst advice you got and blindly followed?

Probably that doing well in high school was the most important thing in the universe. I have ADHD so I was struggling for a hot minute there. School is important in a lot of ways depending on what you want to do with your life, but for me it just held me back.

The worst failure you’re up for sharing, and what you learned from it?

Not making it further with soccer. I played until I was 17 and was considering going to college in the US to play until music got in the way. I don’t know if I was good enough to make it to the pro level, but it would’ve been cool to see how far I got. I guess in some ways it’s not a failure ’cause I still kick the ball with the homies sometimes.

Anything you used to be wrong about?

I used to think that people couldn’t change and were stuck in their ways. I’m learning that having honest conversations is the best way to make positive change. In a lot of ways, we’re products of the people around us.

Embarrassing Internet habit?

Watching plane crash analysis videos to get to sleep. Shoutout Mentour Pilot — that channel is my shit. At this point I’ve probably watched every accident video there is.

Ideal morning routine versus actual morning routine?

Waking up at 9, eating breakfast, and taking a shower. In reality, I usually roll out of bed at 11 and try my best not to be late for work.

Something very off-brand for you?

Sometimes I walk around in public barefoot. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid so it just feels natural, but people look at me mad funny.

Bad health decision?

Smoking cigarettes while having asthma. Not the play (at all).

What do you waste money on?

Food. Especially McDonalds. I work a minimum wage job. I really don’t have the funds for that.

Worst procrastination habit?

A lot of the time if I hit a wall when making a song, I’ll just close Ableton and start watching Premier League highlights. I’m getting better at trying to push through creative blocks now but it still definitely happens. Making this [upcoming] project helped me find strategies to make sure I give my everything to my art.
