It was a simpler time in 1993. Bill Clinton, a silver-haired and amiable saxophone player, had just taken to the presidency. The world was moving through a period of relative international peace and prosperity. And five young men known as the Backstreet Boys were beginning to hone their craft as musicians.

Over the next eight years, the world got increasingly shittier — more war; more scandals; less Clinton as amiable saxophone player, more Clinton as dude who defiled the office of the presidency. But throughout that time, the Backstreet Boys only grew stronger, morphing from a rag-tag collective to one of the most important pop acts on the planet.

Of course, things would get rockier for the Backstreet Boys too: the band had members leave and rejoin, and a long hiatus took them away from the spotlight and their adoring fans for a bit.

But their transition from cutting edge pop act to nostalgic group of heart-warming crooners was less rocky than most. They stayed true to their music — strong, smooth, and surprisingly mature ballads — and let everything else fall into place.

That approach has served them well. Over the last few years, when other legacy acts of the ’90s have become increasingly cringe and out-of-touch with the mainstream, the Boys have stayed in the zeitgeist. Their shows are packed out; their Instagrams are well-attended; and they still play music that uplifts and inspires their devotees.

Well, looks like Australian fans of the band will be able to bathe in all of that sweet ’90s nostalgia too. Yep, the Backstreet Boys are heading down under, making their first stops in out fair land for five years.

The news of the show was actually leaked early, ahead of the official announcement, due to an error on their website.

But hey, who’s complaining?
