Thanks To Thanos, ‘Titantic’ Has Sunk To The Third Highest Grossing Film Of All-Time

Hey, guess what? Avengers: Endgame has made a lot of money.

That in itself isn’t a surprise, of course. The film is the culmination of 11 years of table-setting, a cultural event that appeals to comic book fans, movie fans, children, adults, teenagers, and literally anybody with a pulse. The real surprise would be if Endgame made less than the gross national product of at least 12 countries.

Which it hasn’t. On its first weekend alone, the film grossed US$357 million. That’s a staggering, historic amount of money — usually not even the combined total of every film in the box office top ten equals $300 million.

Time it took to reach $2 billion at the box office:

Titanic: 5,233 days
Force Awakens: 54 days
Infinity War: 48 days
Avatar: 47 days
Endgame: 11 days

More than that, Endgame is boasting one helluva multiplier. For those of you who don’t spend every weekend poring over the box office results (AKA those of you with a normal, healthy human life, unlike me), a multiplier is calculated based on how much money a film makes over its entire run versus its first week. Most movies have a multiplier of two, which means they make double their first weekend over their entire theatrical run. A very good multiplier is any figure higher than two — that means that the film has beaten the box office fatigue that sees attendance quickly drop off after the first week.

Endgame has dropped off only a mere 55% from its first to second weekends. If it continues to experience that gradual drop off rather than a sudden one, it could boast a multiplier of 8 or 9, meaning it’ll make 9 x $300 million, or just over $2.7 billion, in the process becoming the highest grossing film of all time.

In the meantime, Endgame has already hit a notable milestone — it’s outgrossed Titanic, James Cameron’s 1997 smash box office success. That means the only film in the way of Endgame becoming the most profitable movie in the history of cinema is James Cameron’s other smash box office success, Avatar, a film that everybody saw but nobody can remember.
