After teasing new music for the past few weeks via mysterious billboards, The Avalanches have returned with ‘We Will Always Love You’, a tribute to the “profound” connection they feel to fans.

The celestial track samples The Roches and Smokey Robinson, and also features Blood Orange on vocals, with Devonté Hynes lending his syrupy, r&b falsetto to the song. Accompanying the release was a message from The Avalanches, explaining the inspiration behind the song.

“Sometimes we receive a message, telling us our music has been there; through dark times, loneliness, loss,” it reads.

“There are no words to express how moving or profound this connection with you is. Because the music was born out of such moments itself, and so it is felt, by those with open hearts, on the same wavelength it was first created. Morse Code beamed and revived by hearts and hearts alike.”

The Avalanches have teased new music through morse code in the past few weeks. Several billboards popped up across Australia this month that read “After we die, what then? We will always love you”, directing people towards wwaly.earth, which included a morse message that spelt out ‘The Avalanches’. Yesterday, the band sign-posted the song’s release via morse from the rooftop of LA’s Capitol Towers.

In their statement, the band expand upon the concept behind the morse code promo, and how it relates to the track and pending album.

“Our new record is about such journeys, from darkness to light,” it reads. “About life after (all kinds of) death. About the transcendent nature of music itself. Every voice every played on the radio over the last 100 years now exists in the stars; the transmissions of these singers are forever floating around out there, lost in the cosmos, endlessly travelling.”

“Tonight Smokey Robinson duets with Dev Hynes and The Roches. Those spirits are out there. We are each a tune, floating in space. And this one’s for you.”

The Avalanches’ last album Wildflower was released in 2016, following their groundbreaking 2000 release Since I Left You. Looks like we won’t be waiting nearly as long for their next one.
