Triple J Sent A Fake Ben And Liam To The ARIAs, And They Had A Pretty Good Time

Turns out it's not too hard to get onto the ARIAs red carpet.

How do you follow up a very good prank? Well, if you’re triple j’s Ben and Liam at last night’s ARIA awards, you do an… excellent prank.

Last year, the duo flooded the ARIAs red carpet with dopplegängers of Meg Mac, Kevin Parker and Peking Duk’s Adam Hyde. Not to be outdone, last night they found two triple j listeners from Wollongong to take their place on the Red Carpet outside of Sydney’s The Star.

Luke and Callum studied the breakfast duo’s mannerisms and red carpet behaviour to fool the masses — fake Liam broke out the finger gun pose quite a lot, for instance.

The duo did a pretty bang up job — Music Junkee was on the red carpet, and we almost fell for it. Looks like Murray of The Wiggles loved the boys, regardless of their deceitful ways.

Looks like Luke and Callum had a great time, posing with the crowd. Meanwhile, the real Ben and Liam sat back and watched from home. Sometimes it’s nice to have a night in, you know?

The two pairs had an on-air debriefing this morning, with Luke and Callum saying they had fun (and were feeling a “little seedy” today), and were surprised by how easy the whole thing was.

They did admit they fumbled their way through a couple of red carpet interviews, such as one with Tone Deaf, who asked about Ben’s (Luke) foot tattoos. He said, “oh, I’ll have to take a look”, but promised he held his own in other interviews, joking they picked the worst soundbites.

Beyond Ben and Liam, the big winners of the night were Amy Shark and 5 Seconds Of Summer, each winning three awards. The late musician Gurrumul was posthumously awarded four awards for Gurrumul’s Djarimirri (Child of the Rainbow), and Kasey Chambers was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. The full list of winners is here.
