Here Are The Most Breathtaking Looks From The AFLW Awards

The AFLW Awards red carpet is running circles around the Brownlow.

The country’s best and brightest AFLW players walked the red carpet at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium last night for The W Awards and, hoo boy, this red carpet put the Brownlow to shame.

Ahead of this Saturday’s grand final between Melbourne and Adelaide at the MCG, the league’s best players swapped their footy shorts and jumpers for gowns and powersuits for the annual awards night.

Brisbane’s vice captain Emily Bates took out the night’s highest honour — winning Best and Fairest, narrowly beating out Anne Hatchard by one vote. This is her second major win of the year after winning the AFLCA champion player of the year.

Unlike the Brownlow, The W Awards sadly weren’t broadcast on free-to-air television and were only shown on Fox Footy, the AFLW website, or the AFL app — so you’d be forgiven for having missed the truly spectacular red carpet looks.

While the event is clearly much more than a fashion show, it’s particularly refreshing to see a red carpet with some actual style after years of watching male AFL players wear the same boring suit that channels strong Year 12 formal energy for 10 years in a row.

We’ve got bright coloured power suits, sleek gowns, fun prints, and leg slits that would make even Angelina Jolie jealous.

For example, Anne Hatchard’s Karen Willis Holmes suit is quite literally what dreams are made of.

Demons legend Tayla Harris quite literally took my breath away in a green velvet number.

And perhaps I’m a little biased on account of the fact that I love a good suit but I mean, c’mon, Bonnie Toogood truly looked TOO GOOD in this silky Mossman suit.

You have to hand it to the girls for absolutely killing it on both the fashion front and the field.

And finally, the look that has lived rent-free in my brain since the moment I saw it, the inspiration for this recap, the outfit that I will fight to the death to acquire in my wardrobe…

Jessie Wardlaw in the pink power suit with the cool girl sunnies, accompanied by an equally stylish and cool Zimmorlei Farquharson in a contrasting set.

The details here are exquisite. The contrasting bralettes, the dainty jewellery, the off-duty model sunnies — it is simply too much for me to handle.

By the power vested in me by literally nobody at all, I hereby pronounce Jessie Wardlaw and Zimmorlei Farquharson joint best dressed at The W Awards 2022.
