Talented crazies Kanye West and Bret Easton Ellis have recently become members of the world’s best mutual admiration society. First, the duo collaborated on that Scott Disick-starring American Psycho parody while Kanye was promoting Yeezus. Then, Kanye decided to re-cut the trailer for Easton Ellis’ The Canyons. Then, the guys reportedly started working together on an upcoming film project. Then, the guys wore gowns and hid undercover with Marilyn Monroe while fleeing a mob hit. No wait, that’s just the plot of Some Like It Hot.

Today, the pair reunited on the debut episode of Bret Easton Ellis’ new podcast — ‘The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast‘, naturally — where they nerded out over recent films like Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, got worked up over today’s “disposable culture”, and talked about Louis Vuitton shoes and stuff. Although, at times, Ellis did so much blabby philosophising that it seems like he’s in the recording booth on his own, Kanye eventually got into the mood and ended up in fine form. Every podcast should have Kanye on it.

1. On movie recommendations

“The last movie in recent history that I watched over and over into that 30 times and 40 times situation would be There Will Be Blood. But I think the movie I’ve seen the most in my life would be Menace II Society. I know, it sounds like a cliche.”

2. On binge-watching Breaking Bad

“Literally, me and my girl sat up in a hotel room, and we had some days off, and we said, ‘Look, let’s just go ahead and watch this so we can be, like, normal human beings.”

3. On comparing himself to Steve Jobs and Walt Disney

“Just to explain to people out there who are listening, who maybe have some perception or have heard some brash comments that I made, like doing Disney and Steve Jobs comparisons: I have the right to do that, and I have the right to say that.”

4. On being a “creative genius”

“Right now, I’m able to talk and be here and live in LA and be able to get engaged to my girl because I’m a successful musician, currently. But if I were to write my title, like when you’re going through the airport and you have to put down what you do, I would literally write “Creative Genius”, except for two reasons: sometimes it takes too long to write that, and sometimes I spell the word ‘genius’ wrong.”

5. On his favourite music video

“My favourite video is ‘Flashing Lights’, ’cause it has the best mood, feels most like a film, you get the storyline, bam, there’s a surprise in it… It’s like a little short clip out of a film.”

6. On arguing with the head of Zappos

“I got into this giant argument with the head of Zappos. He’s trying to tell me what I needed to focus on; meanwhile, he sells all this shit product to everybody, and his whole thing is based on selling shit product. I’m saying it out loud ’cause yo, how are you telling me what to do? My focus is on humanity. My worldview is being just super dedicated to awesomeness and making things better.”

7. On computers

“When I was in 7th grade, I remember my friend — we called him ‘Digital Thug’, because he was a gangbanger but knew how to use the internet — was the first guy I knew who had super-slow internet at his house, back when computers used to be black with green letters and you had floppy disks that held, like, two words on it.”

8. On computers, part II

“I remember when I wanted to design video games in 7th grade and me and my mum went to the PC store, and at that time you couldn’t get a computer for less than $3000. That, for my mum’s salary was like $3 million, $3 billion! I had all of these ideas of things that I wanted to create. L-l-l-lucky for me — I just did a Porky Pig! — they had an Amiga computer that had 4096 colours and cost like $600, and between me, like, cutting grass and earning an allowance, I was eventually able to get that and start attempting to design a computer game.”

9. On the difficulty of fashion

“The skill set required to dress nice is too high… You have to almost be a scholar of clothing to be a well-dressed person.”

10. On “drops of cheesiness”

“I have two ounces of cheesiness, drops of cheesiness, that I think is part of my success, my drops of cheesiness.”

11. On… I have no f**kin’ idea

“When I made Graduation, I was six years old. When I made 808s, I jumped to five years old. Then the Taylor Swift thing happened, and I had to grow back up. I almost reached ten years old when I did Dark Fantasy! Then I did Cruel Summer and Watch The Throne, I was about 8. Then, when I did Yeezus, I kinda got back to under five, like four-and-a-half. And now, I’m mentally, COMPLETELY, three years old. By the time I’m 50, I’m gonna be one. And by the time I’m dead, I’m gonna be zero.”
