A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of controversial rapper XXXTentacion, after being arrested by Florida police.
Dedrick Devonshay Williams of Pompano Beach was arrested Thursday during a traffic stop and has since been charged with first-degree murder without premeditation in relation to the shooting death of Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, better known by his stage name XXXTentacion. A judge ordered that Williams be held without bond, while homicide detectives are reportedly seeking additional suspects in the shooting. Prosecutors have not alleged a motive, although police have previously described the incident as a robbery attempt.
XXXTentacion rose to fame on Soundcloud, with his sophomore album ? debuting at number one on the US Billboard charts. At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial after being accused of kidnapping and assaulting his pregnant partner.
His death sent shockwaves through the music industry, with artists including Kanye West, Diplo and J. Cole paying their respects on social media. His single ‘SAD!’ subsequently set a new record for single-day global streams on Spotify, despite the service at one time banning his music from their platform.
