Since taking over The Late Show last year, Stephen Colbert’s carved out a bit of a niche with his intelligent and nuanced interviews. While his late-night peers sing carpool karaoke with Elton John in feather boas and jam celebrities bodies in phone booths, Colbert is chatting to Malala Yousafzai about her astonishing teenaged resistance to the Taliban; he’s talking politics with a former president; he’s handing his desk over to a Black Lives Matter campaigner.

That was before Will Ferrell came on his show.

Continuing his spectacular streak of avoiding every promotional interview at all costs, the star of Zoolander 2 rocked up on The Late Show dressed as a cross between Steve Irwin, Crocodile Dundee, and your uncle Kev on a camping trip, and talked exclusively about the very rare species of animals he had in his possession.

“Let me ask you — was it fun to inhabit the character once more?” Colbert asked earnestly, speaking of Ferrell’s iconic Mugatu.
