While You Were Sleeping, Lego Was Breaking Bad
Here are some things that happened overnight. Featuring a new Kelis track, Rory Gilmore vs Tony Soprano, and the Lego game we all want to play.
Tyler, The Creator’s Mountain Dew Ad Pulled:
The third Mountain Dew commercial in a series produced by Tyler, The Creator — king-pin of brat rap troupe Odd Future — has been pulled by PepsiCo, on account of it being racist, offensive, tasteless etc. The ad features a battered white woman identifying her assaulter, Tyler’s alter-ego Felicia The Goat, out of a lineup of black men. “Ya better not snitch on a playa,” he threatens. “Keep ya mouth shut. Keep your mouth shut. When I get outta here I’m gonna dew you up.”
Outspoken social critic Dr. Boyce Watkins has called the ad “arguably the most racist commercial in history.” This isn’t the first time Mountain Dew’s desperation for street cred has landed it in trouble; it turns out Lil Wayne wasn’t the best choice of sponsor, either.
For the second time this week, the real question is why on earth major companies green-light these dumb ads in the first place.
Hold On To Your Hearts, Boys:
Rory Gilmore has a gun, and she looks reaaaaal good with it.
Violet And Daisy — the latest in the Spring Breakers, Bling Ring line of films about teen girls committing crimes for money/Jimmy Choos — was directed by Geoffrey Fletcher (Oscar-winning screenwriter of Precious), and actually premiered back in 2011 at Toronto Film Festival. It follows the complicated relationship between two teenage assassins (Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan), Tony Soprano, and Sia. So: it looks like it’s got just about everything.
The New Kelis Song Will Make Your Morning:
‘Jerk Ribs’ is the first taste we get of her forthcoming album, which is due out in September, may or may not be called FOOD, and was produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Foals).
Breaking Bad vs Lego:
Lego’s videogame series has already riffed on Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings. Here’s what it’d look like if it turned its hand to Breaking Bad.
The clip was made by programmer Brian Anderson, who seems to know as much about the show as he knows about the game. “I have no affiliation with Traveller’s Tales, LEGO, or AMC,” he says. “I’m just a huge fan of the stuff they make. But seriously, if they all got together and made this game, for real, I’d buy it and play the crap out of it.” (via Gizmodo)
