What ‘The Good Place’ Taught Me About Facing Life After Uni

Sometimes it's forking awesome, sometimes it's shirt.

Beyond the incredible scripts, stellar casting and wholly accurate condemnation of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Good Place has a lot to teach us when we’re facing a big change.

Even forking terrifying changes, like leaving the comfort and safety of university.

You Don’t Have To Stop Learning

Congratulations on graduating! Have you sold off (or burnt) your textbooks yet? No? Excellent. Considering The Good Place begins after the main characters have died, it really does show there’s no life change that can stop you from learning.

Maybe, like Chidi, you’re interested in ethics? Maybe you’ve always wanted to take up a hobby, sport or instrument? Leaving university isn’t a reason to stop learning; it’s an opportunity to learn more.

The Work You Put In Adds Up

Think of it this way: if every choice you made through university was documented in positives and negatives (like they are when you die on The Good Place), where would you wind up? Living in glory in The Good Place or being tortured with clam chowder by gigantic molten demons in The Bad Place?

Trick question. Even if you think you’ve wound up in The Bad Place, the show teaches you it doesn’t have to stay that way. The work you put in after university counts just as much in developing who you want to be and where you want to go.

You Might Meet Your Soul Mate – But You Might Not

Aside from that one couple from high school who somehow made it through, dating at university doesn’t exactly bolster your belief in the concept of soul mates. Add in a touch of confusion over your sexuality and it becomes one big soup of bewilderment.

Now you’ve left university, you might daydream about an adorable meet-cute with your soulmate in the coffee line at your first job. And maybe it will happen, we can’t rule it out for sure. But The Good Place has taught us that soulmates aren’t the be all and end all – and that’s totally fine too.

The People You Surround Yourself With Will Help You Grow

Do you really think Eleanor, Chidi, Jason and Tahani would be where they are now if they weren’t together? No forking way. If you thought your uni pals had an effect on you, then the people you choose to be around in the time immediately following graduation… Well, they have a greater impact on you than you could ever predict.

Find people on the same path, and people who are as far from your path as possible. Learn from them, take on the attributes you admire most from them, and grow. They’ll learn from you too!

Demons Are Everywhere

Okay, not ACTUAL demons (although you will probably meet a lot of people who use the phrase “Well, actually…”). Your own personal demons, however, will almost certainly graduate alongside you – and now they’re even more qualified to torture your mind.

But if there’s one thing to take away from watching The Good Place, it’s that outsmarting a demon isn’t actually that hard. Maybe you’re worried you’re not ready, or you’re not good enough. Acknowledging and facing those demons head on is instrumental in overcoming them. You just have to make the choice to do so – if Chidi can do it, so can you.

Frozen Yoghurt Is Just OK

I mean, really. It’s alright. Nothing special.
