We’re Looking For An Assistant Editor

Enquire within. Or "inquire"? Hopefully you know the difference.

Junkee is an Australian pop culture, news and comment site that launched last year. Hello and welcome.

We’re the newest member of the Sound Alliance — a publishing company which encompasses FasterLouder, inthemix, Same Same Mess+Noise and more — and we’re looking for a full-time Assistant Editor to join us in our Surry Hills office in Sydney.

The successful applicant will support Junkee’s Managing Editor at a junior level across writing, commissioning, editing, and all the in-betweens: social network stuff, native content, strategising, fact-checking, GIF-making, etc. The ideal candidate will have a year or two of real-world experience in journalism, writing AND editing about pop culture and/or politics – be it freelance, intern or otherwise. An obsessive love for (of?) correct grammar and an aversion to dangling modifiers is required. A uni degree would be preferred, but is not essential.

More specifically, we’re looking for a smart, opinionated, fast and funny writer who spends far too much time looking at screens. Someone who regularly visits sites like Vulture, Grantland, Reddit and Slate, who can differentiate between an opinion piece that adds to the conversation, and one that adds to the noise. We want a TV and film fanatic who can identify a potential meme on sight, and who is passionate about the Australian pop culture industries. An interest in all things #auspol – and a love/hate relationship with Q&A – would not go astray either.

We want someone who listens to online chatter, who can identify a topic that people are talking about and a smart, funny and original way it could be framed for Junkee’s readers. We want someone who can write a snappy headline that doesn’t reek of Upworthy; someone who knows the difference between clickable and clickbait. We want someone who is passionate about writing, who loves what we do, and who wants to be a part of Junkee’s next chapter.

Is that person you?
