After a good few years playing talking zebras and landing supporting roles in Adam Sandler “comedies,” Top Five looks to be Rock’s return to the kind of upfront, ambitious comedy that made him famous in the first place. Rock wrote and directed it, got Kanye West and Jay-Z to co-produce, and gathered up a stellar ensemble cast of comedians like Tracy Morgan, Kevin Hart, 30 Rock‘s Sherri Shepherd and Jay Pharaoh, so it’s fair to say this project means a bit more to him than, say, Grown Ups 2.

Rock plays a thinly-disguised version of himself in Andre Allen, a superstar comedian/movie star looking to break outside of the funnyman persona he’s created.  Half fading-star-reinvents-himself comedy, half guy-who-has-it-all-realises-what’s-important romance, Top Five has already garnered some rave reviews from critics who’ve praised its honesty, complexity and characterisation of Rosario Dawson’s Chelsea Brown as more than just a smiling love interest.

It also definitely does that New-York-as-a-third-character thing Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd lampooned in We Came Together, but that’s okay.

Top Five comes out March 12 in Australia and is rated MA.  Enter Junkee’s Top Five competition here.
