We’re Hiring! Wanna Be Our New Weekend Editor?

Come work with us! We are very nice.

Want more Junkee in your life? Sign up to our newsletter, and follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook so you always know where to find us.

After a significant increase in absurd and/or appalling things happening in Australian politics as well as Karl Stefanovic’s continued insistence about being a ridiculous human being, our little Junkee team is starting to grow. Our current weekend editor (Hello! That’s me!) is stepping into a full-time role as staff writer and we’re hiring a part-time newbie to fill her/my spot.

Here are some things we’ll be looking for in the successful applicant:

– A passion for all aspects of pop culture including film, TV, politics (yes that counts as pop culture), music, and the internet. The role requires a great deal of initiative and you should be equipped with a broad knowledge and understanding of all these areas.

– A soft spot for Junkee and familiarity with the media in general. We want someone who reads widely and knows the difference between clickable and clickbait; someone who closely follows the news and understands how to add to the conversation rather than the noise.

– A year or two of real-world experience, whether that be as a staff member, freelancer or intern. Specifically, we need someone with a proven ability to write smart, funny, and original work quickly. It would also be helpful to have some editing experience. Though the job’s main focus is writing, you’ll need to be well-versed in producing clean, publishable copy and there may be the occasional sub-editing task. A uni degree would be great, but isn’t essential.

– Experience with social media and WordPress would also be very handy.

The job itself will require you to work each Saturday and Sunday to write, edit, publish and share timely content. (Full disclosure: occasionally that will require you to watch Insiders.) Our main office is based out of Sydney but — as it will empty on weekends anyway — you can be based from anywhere in Australia that has a great internet connection. Connecting with the rest of the team remotely is no big deal, though I personally may be AWOL as I have about seven months of overpriced weekend brunching to catch up on.

To apply send your CV and a few relevant pieces of writing to [email protected] by 5:30pm, Friday July 10.
