As a dyed-in-the-wool Melburnian, it hurts me a little to say this, but sometimes our café culture can be just a teensy bit much. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with my breakfast being served to me in a series of test tubes. Nor will you hear me complaining about my chips being made from dehydrated kale. Hell, I’m even willing to fork out a day’s pay for smashed avocado, since I’m never going to be able to afford my own home anyway.

But those blue algae lattes are a bridge too far.

Made infamous by St Kilda’s Matcha Mylkbar café, blue algae lattes are pretty much what they sound like. They’re huge among people who’d rather photograph their food than eat it, despite the fact that there are serious questions surrounding the purported health benefits of actually consuming this stuff.

But before any of you Sydneysiders start feeling too superior, you might want to take a look in your own backyard, and more specifically at the Topshop on Market Street in the CBD. It’s there, on select dates throughout April, that you’ll find baristas slinging blue algae lattes from behind a pop-up bar.

It’s part of a promotion designed to highlight the store’s denim range. Denim, you understand, is also blue. I sure hope somebody got a pay rise over that one.

The blue bevs will be available both hot and iced, although you won’t actually be able to purchase them. Rather, they’re being handed out for free to people who buy denim products in the store.

Topshop’s blue algae pop-up will operate from 5pm to 8pm on April 13, 20 and 27, and 12pm to 3pm on April 29. Don’t worry if you can’t make it though: Matcha Mylkbar have already announced they’ll be opening a permanent Sydney store before the year is out. Pond scum for everybody, hurrah!
