In 1967, Richard and Mildred Loving were the plaintiffs in the U.S. Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, in which a landmark ruling led to laws against interracial marriage being overturned. It’s widely recognised as a key victory in the civil rights movement, and recently became the basis of the historical drama, Loving.

No, you’re crying.

Directed by Jeff Nichols, the man behind Take Shelter, Mud and most recently Midnight Special, Loving stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as the Lovings, along with Nick Kroll, Marton Csokas and Nichols’ regular muse Michael Shannon. The film competed for the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it was touted by several critics as a potential Oscar contender. Which, let’s face it, would definitely make for a nice change from movies exclusively about white people.

Loving is set to hit theatres stateside in November, and will presumably make its way to Australian screens some time after that.
