NBC announced they were doing their own version of Australian miniseries The Slap about a year ago, and they’ve released the first full-length trailer of their brand-new baby ahead of its premiere in February.

The adaptation, like the 2011 ABC miniseries and the 2008 novel by Christos Tsiolkas, takes a singular event at a family gathering — a man slapping another person’s child — as a jumping-off point to explore the complex and often-troubling dynamics of family, culture, modernity, infidelity and social mores. Judging from the trailer it doesn’t depart from the Australian series in many substantive ways, but does feature a mostly-American cast including Peter Sarsgaard, Uma Thurman and Zachary Quinto, so there you go.

The YouTube vid isn’t included here because, irony of ironies, it’s geoblocked for Australian audiences! Who’da thunk? Here’s the Australian trailer for comparison.

It really is hella similar.

The Slap premieres February 12 on NBC.
