Immigration Minister Scott Morrison is appearing today to give evidence to the inquiry into the treatment of children in immigration detention, alongside Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection Martin Bowles.

The inquiry is being chaired by Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) president Gillian Triggs, and has previously heard that children in detention are being subject to physical and sexual assault, are experiencing severe mental health issues, and are being denied access to basic health and education services.

As Immigration Minister, Morrison is the legal guardian of those children in immigration detention who are without a parent or legal guardian. A few days ago, the government announced that 1,547 children under ten in onshore detention facilities, and their families, would be released into the community on bridging visas. Around 300 children still remain in offshore detention on Nauru and Christmas Island.
