Watch Labor Senator Sam Dastyari Troll Malcolm Turnbull Over The Cuts To Sunday Penalty Rates
"Might have to call back on a Monday."
This week the Fair Work Commission (FWC) announced cuts to weekend and public holiday penalty rates for workers in the hospitality, retail and fast food industries.
According to the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), the cuts will affect around 700,000 workers, some of whom stand to lose up to $6,000 per year. Women and young people will be the hardest hit since they are more likely to be employed on a casual or part time basis than their old male counterparts. Fun!
The FWC decision has been hailed by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who said that it would lead to “more jobs” and “more growth”, which as we know are two of his very favourite things.
“Yes, it will hurt and we would understand that, we can understand the disappointment of many workers in retail and hospitality, but this is the judgment of the independent tribunal,” the PM told 3AW radio on Friday.
Bill Shorten, on the other hand, has said that Labor will do “everything in our power, in the Parliament and in the courts, to remedy this bad decision.”
Now, Labor Senator Sam Dastyari has take his own dig at Turnbull, via a video he posted on his Facebook page this morning.
Dastyari has of course been out of the limelight in recent months after he quit the Labor frontbench over an expenses scandal. Still, between this and his recent trip to the Parkes Elvis Festival, it would seem as though the young senator’s image rehabilitation campaign is well and truly under way.
