"You wouldn't celebrate September 11."

Remember when you would rent a VHS from Blockbuster and you had to sit through a bunch of trailers, classification warnings and ads about video piracy? “You wouldn’t steal a car!” the ad would insist in edgy white font.

Today Juice Media — who also made the excellent Centrelink infomercial a few weeks ago — have taken the piracy ad and applied that same logic to Australia Day, a public holiday that many consider deeply insensitive and nonsensical. A girl sits at her desktop computer, staring at an Australia Day event on Facebook in front of her.

“YOU WOULDN’T CELEBRATE SEPTEMBER 11,” the ad says. “YOU WOULDN’T CELEBRATE AUGUST 6,” it continues, showing the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. “CELEBRATING JANUARY 26 IS KINDA FUCKED UP”.

In other news, today comedian and Axis of Awesome frontwoman, Jordan Raskopoulos, has suggested that we just move the date to May 8 (m88888, get it? You get it). “Sure, it might be a bit cold in May,” she says. “But it’s not as cold as ignoring genocide.”
