It’s been a hotly contested battle. First Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb sang their own adorable intro sequence on their new podcast. Then Karl Stefanovic became the new face of feminism.

But last night, a clear winner emerged. SBS News’ Lee Lin Chin is the great newsreader on Australian television.

“Are you going to fight to the death or talk me to death?”

After releasing a teaser last week, SBS2’s The Feed aired their recreation of the news team fight scene from Anchorman, featuring some of the biggest faces in Australian news saying some of the silliest things.

Luring Chin to an abandoned warehouse with the promise of “free beer and free fashion”, the battle starts out as the ABC News team getting revenge on her for calling the ABC “the worst”. “You bit Aunty, and now Aunty is going to bite back,” according to Juanita Phillips. Apparently the Chaser was unavailable to take Chin down a peg, so the obvious alternative was a fight to the death.

Annabel Crabb tries to be menacing and instead comes off as adorable.

But wait. This is no “government funded bloodbath”, as newsreaders from all channels emerge to get in on the action and make fun of their own taglines while they’re at it.

“We smelt oncoming bloodshed, and figured we had to eye witness this ourselves”, said Sandra Sully of Channel Ten’s Eyewitness News. “We’re still the one… to make you beg for mercy,” warned Karl Stefanovic, flanked by Richard Wilkins and Lisa Wilkinson, who added: “Let’s cross live now to you losers, in a world of pain.” Channel Seven chimed in – “Seven, first in news, and first in beating down you punk ass bitches,” according to Derryn Hinch.

Cue fight scene.

Honorable mentions to Juanita Phillips for choking Richard Wilkins with his own tie, and Annabel Crabb who is apparently a cannibal. The team at SBS2 got left out of the action – but don’t worry SBS2, you gave us the wonderful image of Lee Lin Chin having the kind of reaction to beer that Popeye has to spinach, and for that, we thank you.
