Democratic Vice Presidential candidate and wicked harmonica player Tim Kaine dropped by The Late Show on Friday night for a chat with Stephen Colbert. It was the first late-night appearance for the Virginia senator since he was selected as Hilary Clinton’s running mate back in June, and an experience he admits he never thought he’d have.

Fortunately, he was able to enlist the help of Selina Myers’ loyal bag man Gary Walsh, aka actor Tony Hale from HBO’s Veep, to help get him through the opening moments unscathed.

Once they got into the actual interview, Kaine touched on a wide array of topics, including his years as a Jesuit missionary, the whirlwind experience of being selected as Clinton’s running mate, and how he feels about being described as America’s stepdad.

“Are you okay with not being cool?” asked Colbert at one point. The Senator replied that his kids had been preparing him for that “for 26 years.”

Kaine also managed to deliver a pretty decent take-down of Donald Trump over remarks the Republican nominee made about Clinton being a “bigot”. Which is good, since shit talking Trump is basically going to be his entire job until the polls close on November 8.

But if you had any doubts as to what qualified Kaine to sit one heartbeat away from the oval office, they should be well and truly put to rest by this clip of him jamming like a hero on the harmonica with The Late Show house band Jon Batiste and Stay Human.
