The geniuses behind Netflix’s hit animation about the sad horse Bojack Horseman are bringing a new comedy to Netflix, and it sounds wonderful. It’s called Tuca and Bertie, and it’s about two friends who are also birds.

Netflix has ordered a ten-episode series about two 30-year-old bird women who are good mates and who live in the same apartment building: Tuca, a cocky, care-free toucan, and Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird. Tuca is slated to be played by comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish, one of the stars of Girls Trip. Haddish will also be adding an executive producer credit to her slate.

Tuca and Bertie is the brainchild of BoJack Horseman producer, the brilliant and absurd Lisa Hanawalt and will bring with her other BoJack heroes like Raphael Bob-Waksberg and executive producers Noel Bright and Steven A. Cohen.

It seems to be following an interesting doubling-down on the rich inner-life of animal-people, and if it’s anything like Bojack, it will be hilarious and devastating all at once. I wonder if it will be canonically set in the same world? I wonder if we’re looking at a Bojack Extended Universe.

There is currently no release date for the series.
