As reactions to the first US Presidential Debate pour in, one thing that has been noted by a lot of viewers and commentators is the way that Donald Trump repeatedly interrupted Hillary Clinton as she was speaking.

The interruptions started early. When Clinton accused Trump of having “rooted” for the housing crisis, saying “[Trump] said back in 2006, ‘Gee I hope it does collapse because then I can go in and buy some and make some money,'” Trump butted in, saying “that’s called business by the way.”

These kinds of interjections proved to be a regular feature throughout the night, with Trump often interrupting with a single world: “wrong.”

Clinton also interrupted her opponent on a number of occasions, however by the end of the night, a running tally provided by AJ+ recorded four times as many interruptions by Trump.

Users on social media were quick to point out that Trump’s repeated interjections mirrored the experiences of many women who frequently find themselves being shouted down or spoken over by men.

They also praised Clinton for keeping a cool head, in spite of the frequent interruptions.

Towards the end of the debate, Trump said that his opponent lacked the “stamina” to be President, to which Clinton responded by calling out Trump’s long history of sexist remarks. “This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs, and dogs. Someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers,” she said.
