Kendrick Lamar has taken out the #1 spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 with his hit ‘HUMBLE.’.

Lamar’s victory is a momentous one for triple j — it marks the first time ever a person of colour has topped the annual countdown. Kendrick came close to hitting #1 with ‘King Kunta’ back in 2015, but was squeezed out to second place by a five-piece rock band from Menangle, NSW called The Rubens (#NeverForget).

‘HUMBLE.’ is also only the second hip-hop track to win the Hottest 100. The first hip-hop tune to win was… ‘Thrift Shop’ by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

On the local front, it was Sydney’s Gang Of Youths who dominated this year’s countdown. The five-piece had a total of four songs in the poll, with ‘Let Me Down Easy’ coming in at #2, ‘The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows’ at #5, ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out?’ at #10 and their cover of The Middle East’s ‘Blood’ at #41.

This year’s top ten also featured Methyl Ethel at #4 with ‘Ubu’, Lorde at #6 with ‘Green Light’, PNAU at #7 with ‘Go Bang’, Thundamentals at #8 with ‘Sally’ and Vance Joy at #9 with ‘Lay It On Me’.

65 of the tracks in this year’s countdown came from local artists, with the likes of Vera Blue, Peking Duk and The Smith Street Band all making it in. See the full list of every song in this year’s Hottest 100 below.

This was the first year since 1998 that the Hottest 100 wasn’t held on January 26. triple j announced they’d be changing the date of the countdown in November — a move that came after increasing scrutiny over how and when we celebrate Australia Day, a day that causes considerable pain for Indigenous Australians.
