"Awkward" doesn't even do it justice.

Enough has been written about Tony Abbott’s universally unpopular decision to bestow a Knighthood on Prince Philip this past Australia Day — a bizarre, reactionary move that one the one hand gave one more title to a Prince who was already drowning in about thirty others, and on the other sent a terrible message to the actual Australians who may have rather liked the honour.

The condemnation has been round, and bipartisan. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten called it “a time warp” and “anachronistic”; Greens leader Christine Milne called it a “joke within a joke”; there’s tension brewing within the Liberal backbench; and even Rupert Murdoch called it “a joke and embarrassment“. As Senator Cory Bernardi said on Tuesday, “It would appear the PM has found a surefire way to unite all Australians”.

All this, of course, makes for excellent comedic fodder. Enter Huw Parkinson — video editor extraordinaire — who has seamlessly inserted Tony Abbott’s press conference into Hugh Grant’s terrible best man speech in Four Weddings And A Funeral.

“This scene — or more specifically, Simon Callow’s boomy laugh — was going through my head every time I saw Tony Abbott talking about his decision,” Parkinson says.

“Awkward” doesn’t even do it justice.
