"He's locked me up indefinitely, but at least he doesn't flip-flop."

It was the perfect storm: a leadership spill featuring one of the most abhorrent politicians in Canberra, and a recently cancelled ABC comedy series with zero fucks left to give. So it is that Tonightly has taken aim at Peter Dutton with one of the darkest sketches in the show’s short history.

The 90 second clip sees the Tonightly team “hitting the streets of Nauru” to ask locals for their feelings about Dutton and his legacy as Immigration Minister. And while it might seem unlikely, it turns out they’re actually big fans of his work.

“Peter Dutton’s a man of his word,” says one man through the fence of the detention centre. “He said he’d keep us out of Australia, and he’s certainly done that.”

“There was this one time I needed medical attention and I needed to get off the island, but Peter Dutton said no,” adds a woman. “He didn’t cave. And I respect that.”

Even the kids love him. “He put us here, and he won’t back down,” says a boy no older than eight. “I’ve been here for 180 days!”

The sketch ends with the asylum seekers throwing their weight behind Dutton’s push to become Prime Minister. And lucky for them, it looks like that could happen by the end of the week.

God help us all.
