This Parody Of ‘Redfern Now’ Reveals That Sydney’s Northern Beaches Are Basically ‘The OC’
Such drama. Many stripes.
Redfern Now is a critically-acclaimed drama about a diverse group of Indigenous families in inner-city Sydney. It has aired on ABC for nearly three years now, and in that time it has dealt with issues of poverty, drugs, racism, homophobia and violence in masterful and unflinching ways. Its cast have taken home practically all of the AACTA Awards, and the show has consistently won the Logie for Most Outstanding Drama.
‘Avalon Now’ is very different. At the start of the month, this clip by Sydney filmmakers Bruce Walters and Felix Williamson took out the top prize at the Creative Creatures Film Festival held which was held in a bowling club in the Northern suburbs.
“It all started when Bruce was sitting on the deck enjoying a barbecue with a chilled pinot grigio,” Williamson told The Daily Telegraph. “He was talking about how it’s so hard to get French champagne by the crate when he realised — the stuff that comes out of our mouths.”
“Basically [this] came out of a disgust for ourselves,” Walters added.
Weirdly, the video is now being used as a piece of online content for Fairfax real estate publication Domain. It was posted this morning on their Facebook page alongside the property listings for Avalon.
People are unsurprisingly responding really well, but with quotes like “You need to go back to where you came from #I’llRideWithYou,” I think I’d much rather live in Redfern, thanks.
