Better than if Michael Bay did it, which isn't saying much, but still.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted when I was five, and it was one of my favourite shows. My older brother used to torment me about how Power Rangers was a rip off of Transformers because he just didn’t get it. I had a pink Power Rangers costume that I insisted on wearing to book-week and had a crush on Tommy, the green-and-white one. Didn’t everyone though?

Every child wants to think that someone might give them the power to morph into a weaponised animal robot (otherwise known as a Zord) and fight unknown intergalactic baddies whose henchmen were basically just a grey Wiggle.

But did anyone stop to think that turning high school students into killing machines might leave them with severe PTSD? How long can a group of kids hold the fate of the world on their shoulders?

This deboot — it’s not a prequel, sequel or anything official, just hardcore fan fiction — is the answer to that very question. Directed by Joseph Kahn, who oddly enough directed a Britney Spears greatest hits compilation, the short film is dark, violent and surprisingly great. It’s like Power Rangers meets Kill Bill.

Also, It stars James Van Der Beek, whose face you are familiar with even if you haven’t watched Dawson’s Creek:

Except now he’s badass and has a robotic leg.

Enjoy.

Also, here’s a kind of intense explanation from the film’s producer, Adi Shankar, as to how this all came about. He looks like he’s a peacocking pickup artist, likens the power rangers to African child soldiers, and seems to have beef with Orlando Bloom. Luckily, that doesn’t take away from how great this new addition is.
