True Detective was a show that in its first season, seemed to whip the world into a Mcconaughey frenzy with people falling over themselves to proclaim that it was the Best. Show. Ever. (or at least, one of the best shows ever). However, its second season — with the exception of Colin Farrell and his spectacular moustache — never quite gripped people in the same way.

You said it, Russ.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the new HBO programming head Casey Bloys, has said that it’s unlikely that True Detective will get a third season. Given the anthology structure of True Detective (and the level of stars it attracted) this is a shame — maybe we finally could have gotten that all-female cast! On the other hand, the second season really was not good (I mean it).

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is still under contract to HBO, so fans of his time metaphors, crying-wife characters and vape gags need not be too upset. Look on the bright side: there are plenty of tortured people to watch on HBO as it is.
