You're a mess, Harry.

Remember when Marty McFly grabs a newspaper in Back to the Future 2 and gets a taste of the strange, incomprehensible reality he finds himself in? The headlines read “President says she’s tired” and “activists mobilise to ban alphabet soup”. Well this, the one I just wrote about the cinematic prowess of Harry Potter’s flatulent dead body, would absolutely not be out of place. 2016 is doing us proud.

If you haven’t been on the internet for the past couple of months, the film in question, Swiss Army Man, premiered at Sundance this January provoking both favourable reviews and walk-outs. It tells the story of a suicidal man trapped on an island (Paul Dano) who is saved by a disgusting yet whimsical corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). The corpse offers both unlikely companionship and practical use as its erect penis — yes sorry, I forgot to mention that — functions as a compass and the constant farting transforms him into a jetski on which Paul Dano can escape.

In his review which speaks to the purposeful surrealism and humour of the film, Variety’s Peter Debruge described it as “Cast Away meets Weekend at Bernies, as directed by Michel Gondry”. And you know what? I’m keen as hell.

Swiss Army Man will be released in the US this July. Fingers crossed the Australian festival circuit picks it up around the same time.
