Before Making a Murderer and The Keepers, there was the OG murder mystery docuseries, The Staircase. The case is a fascinating and chilling true story of a crime novelist accused of killing his wife, after she is found dead at the bottom of  the titular staircase in their home. Now, not only is the original series coming to Netflix, but it will be expanded with three new episodes.

The Staircase originally aired in 2004 and was a huge international success, especially among true crime enthusiasts. Director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade crafted the series around crime novelist and accused killer, Michael Peterson, and his battle to clear his name after becoming the top suspect in the death of Kathleen Peterson.

While Michael Peterson was eventually found guilty for the murder, he was released from prison in 2011 when it was revealed that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation gave misleading information during the case.

Netflix’s The Staircase will include the original 2004 series along with three new episodes. The trailer infers that the new episodes will deal with evidence tampering and other cover-ups that may have led to Peterson’s initial conviction of life in prison.

The 13-episode series will debut on the streaming service on June 8.
