The Last Jedi, the highly anticipated next instalment in the Star Wars franchise is coming out next month, and people are frothing for it. But, Mark Hamill, the beloved beardy actor who plays Luke Skywalker has asked us to cool it with the spoilers.

Hamill has pleaded for everyone to keep our lips zipped with all the secrets.

“Let me take this opportunity to personally ask you to keep all that happens in the #LastJedi a secret for as long as is humanly possible. Thanking you ALL in advance,” he tweeted.

While the capitalised letters on ‘ALL’ does give the message the flavour of a passive-aggressive company-wide email from your boss, it does seem to be a polite and heartfelt plea to our better instincts. He is certainly not going to “force” us to listen to him, ha ha.

The Star Wars films have traditionally been known for dramatic reveals, such as the original trilogy’s shock paternity revelation in The Empire Strikes Back, where the villain Darth Vader reveals to Luke that he is in fact, his daddy. Hamill’s tweet could just be a throwback to that moment of cinematic history, or could be foreshadowing a dramatic event in the next film. Naturally, conspiracy nerds are reading way too much into it, and have gone wild with speculation.

The theories range from the plausible to the ludicrous, with the majority of them centering again around shock familial revelations, and also the potential for various people to turn to the dark side. The latest trailer seems to hint strongly that Rey, the main character from The Force Awakens, will at least be tempted to the dark side.

Hamill himself addressed a persistent theory that points to a clue from the official Star Wars posters, which always seems to show the villain from the movie looming in the background.

As The Last Jedi shows Luke Skywalker himself in that position, people are convinced that he is actually the secret bad guy. Hamill has tried his best to dispel the rumour.

Regardless of what the reveal ends up being, the important thing is to listen to our buddy Luke Skywalker, and lend him a hand by keeping our mouths shut. (That was a funny joke because Luke had his hand cut off, I’ve seen the films).

The Last Jedi is in Australian cinemas on December 14.
