The Guy Who Made ‘Zombieland’ Is Directing A Big Screen Version Of ‘COPS’
Watcha gonna do when they come for you?
Bad boys, bad boys, watcha gonna do? Watcha gonna do when they come for you? One of the longest running reality TV shows in the history of the medium is coming to the big screen courtesy of the guy behind Zombieland and Gangster Squad. Director Ruben Fleischer has jumped on board a film adaptation of ‘COPS’ – although from the sounds of things, the final product mightn’t bear much resemblance to the show.
According to Deadline, rather than mimicking the documentary style of the TV series, the film will instead be “an edgy narrative feature with a buddy comedy bent,” with sources citing the Lethal Weapon series as a possible inspiration. Fleischer will direct from a script by Cameron Fay, whose biggest writing credit to date is an unproduced sequel to the recent Three Stooges film. So there’s a good sign.
Of course maybe the shift in tone is for the best. After all, relations between police and the US general public aren’t exactly harmonious right now. In light of recent events, watching cops slam suspects onto the hood of patrol cars might not seem as entertaining as it did in the past.
