Whether it’s comparing former Communications Minister Stephen Conroy to Joseph Stalin, depicting Vladimir Putin and Jacqui Lambie in the throes of diplomatic passion, or putting a near-naked Clive Palmer atop a Miley Cyrus-style wrecking ball, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph isn’t exactly known for the subtlety or nuance of its front pages.

Following the tragic and untimely passing of South Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes yesterday, though, the Telegraph has come up with a beautiful and highly memorable tribute, symbolically retiring its back page usually dedicated to sport in favour of a poignant and deeply respectful wraparound cover to celebrate Hughes’ life.

The front page is equally laudable, and not just because of the obvious tact or genuine sentiment behind it. It’s proof that a newspaper can still capture and distil a social mood in a way that can’t quite be done elsewhere. The Tele‘s cover today will be remembered.
