Viewers Are Slamming ‘The Bachelor’ For Slut Shaming A Contestant
Fans were not impressed.
The producers of The Bachelor have been accused of slut shaming a contestant who had previously been employed as an adult entertainer.
For the past week Channel 10 have been teasing that a massive bombshell was going to be dropped on last night’s episode. In the end, it was revealed that 24-year-old architecture student Leah Costa, who has been positioned as one of this year’s villains, used to work as a topless waitress. She had not yet revealed this fact to Matty J, possibly because the pair have barely spoken two words to one another.
“I don’t think it’s fair for Matty to end up with someone who he doesn’t really know about,” said Elora, a contestant on a show where a man is expected to pick his soul mate from a group of women he only met a couple of weeks ago.
Matty J later told Leah that her past wasn’t a “deal breaker”, but that he was worried about what else she might be keeping from him. Leah then revealed that a second contestant, Simone, had also worked as a topless entertainer.
Ultimately, Matty J showed Leah the door, telling her “I’m being distracted by all the drama… and I do think it’s best that you leave.”
The show’s handling of the ~shocking reveal~, as well as the reaction by Matty J and the rest of the contestants, has been roundly criticised on social media.
Really? That’s the “skeleton”? I LOVE GIRLS WHO SHAME OTHER GIRLS AND ADD FIRE TO THE BURNING STIGMA OF ADULT INDUSTRIES #TheBachelorAU pic.twitter.com/vl2K5h3vCL

As much as I hate Leah, it’s not fair for the other girls to bash her for being a stripper. There’s nothing wrong with it #TheBachelorAU

People were especially pissed given the fact that no one on the show seemed to have any concerns about the fact that previous Bachelor’s Tim and Blake were both topless waiters themselves.
Also, it’s not like Matty J has shown any great aversion to getting his gear off.
So the Bachelor franchise have happily cast multiple male strippers as Bachelors but shamed a woman for the same job? Cool.#TheBachelorAU

A man who spends most of his time shirtless and wet, slut shaming his harem for having jobs. Fuck right off Matty J #TheBachelorAU

It’s almost like there’s some kind of weird double standard at play here, huh.
