This one’s for all you film graduates stuck making advertorial videos for tinea cream, the weekend videographers, the PT Anderson fankids with time on their hands, or just basically anyone with an iPhone, a vision and a desire to make bank to the tune of 30,000 clams.

The massive Connect5 film competition launched last month with a callout for creatives across Africa, India, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia to produce an original five-minute film with the theme ‘Connecting Lives’. But if it is the dollar — not art or the prospect of acclaim throughout the entire Southern Hemisphere — that makes you holla, it’s worth noting the prize for the best short is $30,000USD. That’s $6,000 per minute.

The comp runs right up until the end of this month (September — you guys, it’s already September) and all submissions made via the Connect5 website will be in with a chance of firstly winning one of two $5,000AUD prizes, followed by a place at the regional finals in Bangkok where you’ll then be pitted against entrants from the other six countries in the competition.

“Think about it. We’re more connected than ever before,” the competition creators explain. “Sharing thoughts and building on amazing ideas has never been easier. The downside is, the more we look at the world through our mobile devices, the more alone we can feel.”

The comp is a really big deal, you’ll have the chance for your film to be viewed by millions of Optus customers around the world and the entries will be judged on originality of content, storytelling and cinematography with the competition creators encouraging everyone (not just professional filmmakers) to enter.

But with less than a month to go, you really need to get your skates on. Create a five minute film that tells a story around connecting lives and what we could do to make people’s lives better.

Submissions close September 30 2016, and judging takes place from October 3-7. Find out more or go ahead and enter here.
