Why I Still Finished A Degree I Probably Won’t Use

Every student who studies a double degree has probably heard: “So which one are you leaning more towards?” For the most part of my Business and Journalism degree, I was really torn between the two.

But after taking one amazing journalism class at uni, I decided that was the career for me. I focused all of my efforts into finding journalism internships and volunteering for things like community radio and really building up that skill base.

At one point, I seriously considered dropping my business degree. It would have meant I could pick up more journalism electives and put all of my focus into the one degree. But in the end I decided to stick out my business degree. Here’s why.

There Wasn’t That Much Left

My course was pretty flexible, but I still chose to take on two business subjects and two journalism subjects each semester. This meant that going into my fourth and penultimate year I only had four business units left. That is, two a semester, which was a super achievable goal. There was never going to be any harm done by finishing them.

I Didn’t Suffer Through Economics For Nothing

Economics, accounting, data analysis. Each represented its own semester of hell, but I managed to pass them all on first attempt. But that doesn’t mean it was easy! If I had dropped my business degree all of that hard work – or as I like to call it torture – through would have been for nothing! It was highly unlikely I would’ve been able to use them for credit towards my other degree, so they would’ve equated to debt-gaining wastes of time. No thanks!

The Skills Taught In Business Degrees Are Transferable

Especially since I majored in public relations, it meant I learned about things like running campaigns, human resources, how to deal with crises and some honest to goodness writing skills.

Even some of the skills taught in business core units, like marketing and management, will stick with me for a long time. For example, as much as I hated accounting, being able to make a budget is a great life skill! There’s barely anything I learned in business that won’t come in handy one day.

Having Two Degrees Is Impressive

There’s a large amount of satisfaction that comes with graduating with a double degree. Although you spend longer studying than your single-degree peers, at the end of the day being able to say you have two degrees is pretty impressive. Mum would be proud.

No One Really Knows What The Future Holds

I’ve been told many times that my generation will probably have about six different careers throughout life. I know for sure that I want to go into journalism. And for the next few years I’m confident that’s what I’ll end up doing. But as someone who’s changed their mind so many times when it comes to what I want to do with my life – from fashion design to music – there’s no way of knowing what I’ll be doing in 20 years from now. Having a business degree means that I could apply my learnings to a totally different job in the future, and even though that’s not what I want right now it doesn’t mean it’ll never be
